BHUBANESHWAR: Odisha will not object to the collection data under National Population Register, evident from the notification issued by the state’s revenue department.

A government notice dated 1st Jan, 2020 assigned officials at the Collectorate and Tahisildar level to the job of census data collection. The NPR, started in 2010, will be updated in the house-listing phase of Census of India 2021 between April- September 2020.

Naveen Patnaik had raised a few eyebrows by supporting the Centre’s Citizenship Ammendment Bill (now an Act) in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. A few days later, he announced that his party, the Biju Janata Dal, which has supported most of the Narendra Modi government’s bills, would not support the National Register of Citizens.

“NPR and Census are two sides of the same coin, carried out every ten years by the Register General of India. This time the same questionnaire of 2010 has been repeated with the additional information being sought being your phone number, voter card, driving license and aadhaar number ‘IF‘ available,” said BJD spokesperson and Auli MLA, Pratap Kishore Deb claiming this had nothing to do with the party’s stand on NCR.

The Mamata Banerjee led government in West Bengal and the CPI(M) led government in Kerala have stayed all data collection work related to NPR in their respective states. Opposition, opposed to the Modi government’s push of CAA with NRC, has pointed out that the Minister of Home Affairs in November of 2014 had himself described the NPR as the first step towards the creation of a NRC.
